There’s a New Dealer in Town: Community Meeting about newest drug trends
A variety of local agencies will be hosting a very special presentation called “There’s a New Dealer in Town” on Tuesday, May 19 beginning at 7 at the Cowlitz County Expo Center. The public is invited to take part in this panel-style community meeting with powerful informational presentations. The meeting will begin with a forum to discuss the newest drug trends in our community and how to combat them. Drug and other statistics will be presented, and there will be time for questions and answers with Longview Police officers and other agency representatives.

Council Workshop on May 19 looks at crime reduction and fire/MS initiatives
The City Council will hold a workshop to review potential funding scenarios for implementation of the crime reduction and fire/EMS initiatives. The funding options being explored include consideration of federal grant programs in combination with voter-approved operating levies. Council will consider the affordability and likelihood of community support of these options in light of the continued economic challenges we are experiencing. The workshop will begin at 7 p.m. in the Longview City Hall Training Room on the second floor of City Hall, 1525 Broadway.

Teen Photographer’s Work on Display at Longview Public Library
Chelsey Hulsey, an R.A. Long High School Senior, will present the photographs from her senior project at the Longview Public Library. Her photos will be on display in the small meeting room on the lower level, adjacent to the TeenSpace, until the end of the month. A reception will be held for Chelsey at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19.

Immediate opening on the Historic Preservation Commission
Would you like to play a vital role in Longview’s future by helping to preserve its past? The City is seeking citizens to actively serve on the Historic Preservation Commission effective immediately. The position is non-compensated. The Commission is seeking a professional in a field related to historic preservation is for the vacant “professional representative” position. Anyone with experience in identifying, evaluating, or protecting historic resources and having a background in a related discipline or trade is encouraged to apply. The professional representative may reside outside of the City of Longview when an exception is granted by the City Manager. Members of the commission may not include any officer, official, or employee of the City, or any of their immediate family members.

Garage Sales are a regulated activity within city limits
The City of Longview would like to remind residents that while conducting a garage sale does not require a permit, garage sales are a regulated activity within city limits. Sales of secondhand merchandise conducted from residences and designated as garage sales, estate sales, yard sales, and/or moving sales are allowed without a permit provided they are conducted under the following requirements:
- Residents may conduct garage, estate, yard and/or moving sales from their residence for up to 20 days in a calendar year. Each sales event may not exceed four consecutive days, and goods must be removed between sales.
- No sale shall begin before 8 a.m. or continue beyond 9 p.m.
- No goods or merchandise shall be offered for sale that are not owned and used by the persons conducting the sale.
- No more than four residences may combine merchandise in the sale.
- Garage sale signs shall not be placed more than six blocks or 2,400 feet from the location of the sale, and these signs shall not be placed on utility poles, trees, medians, or other devises located within the public right-of-way.
- Signs may be put up as many as two days prior to the scheduled event, and must be removed within 24-hours after the event has concluded. Failure to do so can result in a civil fine.

Tents, canopies and other temporary structures may have restrictions
The City of Longview would like to remind residents that the placement of detached temporary structures of any size or type is a regulated activity within city limits. Placement of this type of structure, whether temporary or permanent, may require a permit from the Community Development Department prior to placement. A detached temporary structure or “membrane structure” is defined as a structure, enclosure, or shelter constructed of fabric or pliable materials supported by any manner. Check with Community Development prior to placement of a temporary structure to see if you need a permit, or to learn more about guidelines and restrictions.
