Next unpaid furlough days on May 22 and May 26

City employees will be taking their second unpaid “furlough day” this month in to continue to help reduce the City’s $1.5 million budget shortfall.  The next closure day is Friday, May 22 for most offices, and Monday, May 26 for the Longview Public Library.  Even though most City offices will be closed on unpaid furlough days, many City services will still be available 24/7: emergency and public safety services, the Library’s book/video drop box, the City Hall drop box for utility payments, and online utility bill payments and recreation class registrations at www.mylongview.com. The CUBS transit center will be open on its regular schedule.

More information:  Please see our City offices closure schedule. Any questions or comments about these closures can be directed to 442.5004.

Thank you, Servant Week volunteers!

This year’s Servant Week volunteers from a variety of local churches deserve a huge thank you from our community. They put in many hours in the pouring rain in early May to provide general clean-up services throughout the city including streets, alleys, and parks. Additionally, they performed a variety of office duties at City Hall and elsewhere, and they stepped up and assisted a number of local property owners to replace broken windows, repaint, and do a wide range of property maintenance chores.  Several people who benefited from the volunteer services had nothing but good things to say about the help they received and the friendly attitudes of the workers.  Not only did the Servant Week volunteers make our community more aesthetically appealing, they made it safer and healthier, and saved homeowners and the City a considerable sum of money in the process. In these times of economic hardship, the City of Longview salutes their service to our community!

Heads up for residents:  Landfill customers will begin using new dumping location on July 1

Effective July 1, all residential and business customers delivering waste materials for disposal will be directed to dispose of waste at the Waste Control Facility located at 1150 Third Ave. in Longview.  This new transfer location will offer the same hours of operation and provide the same services as the landfill, including waste disposal, recycling, household hazardous waste collection, and small quantity generator waste disposal services.  Rates will remain the same.

CDBG amendment comment period begins May 19

The public is invited to comment on a proposed amendment to a 2008 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for $98,600.  The proposed amendment would allow for resurfacing and fencing of the basketball court at Archie Anderson Park in the Highlands neighborhood.  A seven-day comment period began on May 19 and will continue through May 26.  Written comments may be sent to Ann Davis, Longview City Clerk, PO Box 128/1525 Broadway, Longview, WA 98632.  A public meeting is scheduled for May 28 at 7 p.m. before the Longview City Council at Longview City Hall.  Any written comments must be submitted prior to the public meeting.  Longview City Hall is accessible for persons with disabilities.  Please let the City know 24 hours in advance if you will need any special accommodations to attend the meeting, or if you will require an interpreter.

STORMWATER:  Local businesses may be impacted by new state regulations

The cities of Longview and Kelso and Cowlitz County are updating their stormwater requirements to comply with new state regulations for urbanized areas.  Businesses that discharge debris, process water, or wash water to the storm drainage system without a permit will be impacted.  The regulations will also affect developers, particularly those with larger projects outside the diking district (hill areas).

More information:  To learn more about how your business may be impacted, attend one of the many public meetings, or contact your local public works department:
