Stay Fire Smart!  Don’t Get Burned!

The Longview Fire Department will host its annual Open House on Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The Open House is LFD’s signature fire prevention event that provides not only fire and life safety information through several scheduled activities, but also provides information and experience about other participating agencies like American Medical Response, Underwriters Laboratories, Search & Rescue and Dive Team, Safe Kid’s Coalition, and many others.  There will be activities for both adults and children such as the Jr. Firefighter Nozzle Practice, Fire Extinguisher Training, Rope Rescue Display, and more.  The Longview Fire Department hopes to see you there and reminds you to “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned.”

Businesses can now apply for a City of Longview license online

On April 23, 2009, Council authorized the City to enter into a partnership with the State of Washington’s Department of Licensing Division (DOL) for the DOL Master License Service Program (MLS). This contract enables all businesses operating within the Longview city limits to apply for or renew their State Master License online, and at the same time, apply for a new or renewal of a City of Longview business license.  This new partnership with MLS will allow “one-stop shopping” as businesses can also apply for other state and local licenses that are in the system.  The DOL’s renewal processing fee is $15 for a new license, and $9 for a license renewal.  The City of Longview business license fee remains the same at $50 for new and renewal applications.

Design contract awarded to Kittelson & Associates for intersection improvements on Tennant Way at 14th and 15th Avenues.

To reduce congestion at two of Longview’s busiest intersections, the City has awarded a design contract to Kittelson & Associates for intersection improvements on Tennant Way at 14th and 15th Avenues, and to upgrade the traffic signal on 14th Avenue at California Way.  Improving these intersections will reduce congestion, improve safety, and allow them to be synchronized with other signals on Tennant Way and on 15th Avenue.  Improvements have been planned for these intersections for several years, and two federal safety grants were received to help pay for improvements.  In addition, the new Super Wal-Mart store to be built on 7th Avenue in 2010 is contributing to the cost of the improvements due to the projected volume of traffic their store will generate at these intersections.  Kittelson & Associates will analyze the current conceptual design consisting of dual left turn lanes, median curbs, and converting Kessler Blvd. to one-way between 15th Avenue and Douglas Avenue.  Kittelson will recommend a final design concept, and residents will have the opportunity to provide input on the proposed design.
