Fall Children’s and Family Programs at Longview Public Library through November 21

Stir Your Creativity and enjoy a rainbow of De Colores at the Longview Public Library this fall!  Colorful leaves are falling and the library has colorful programs for all ages.   Weekly programs will run through the week before Thanksgiving, with a special “Festivals of Lights” event for all ages on December 8 from 6-7 p.m.

Fall Teen Programs at Longview Public Library

Read Beyond Reality at the Longview Public Library this fall!  Teen Read Week runs from October 18 – 24.  It is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association, encouraging teens to read something out of this world “for the fun of it.”  Teen Tuesdays, the Longview Public Library’s program for teens will celebrate this theme all fall on Tuesday nights from 6-7 p.m.

“Nature backpacks” available for checkout at the Longview Public Library

Thanks to a gift from the Abernathy Fish Technology Center, Longview Public Library Youth Services has four “nature backpacks” that children and families can check out to use for exploring nature at home or in the wild.  Susan Linn Ostrand, biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, procured a grant for the backpacks. The nature backpacks are intended to promote the outdoors and encourage children to enjoy and learn about the world in which they live.  The four nature backpacks are each filled with materials to enhance the learning experience while playing outside. Appropriate ages for the backpacks are 6-12 years, but they are available for all library card holders for the usual three-week loan period.

More information: For more information about any of the fall programs, call the Longview Public Library at 442.5301.  The nature backpacks may be reserved using the catalog in the library or online at: http://www.longviewlibrary.org:8088/#focus (keywords: “Nature Backpack”).

Public Hearing for 2008 Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER) on October 22

The cities of Longview and Kelso manage programs that benefit affordable housing.  The HOME Partnership Program provides funding opportunities to increase and maintain affordable housing.  The Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) provides grants for public and community facilities, infrastructure, housing, economic development, public services and planning activities within the city of Longview.  Projects benefit low/moderate-income residents and redevelopment activities, and are funded through the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  The 2008 annual evaluation report for these programs is available for public review and comment from October 15 through October 29, 2009. A public hearing will be held at the Longview City Hall Council Chambers, 1525 Broadway on Thursday, October 22 at 7 p.m.
