Take the R.A. Long Park and Civic Center Circle Plan Survey

The City of Longview recently completed its first of three workshops to develop a master plan for RA Long Park and the Civic Center Circle. At the first workshop, the City introduced the project, provided goals and a timeline for the project implementation, and gathered feedback from the public on potential elements for the park and traffic improvements.  If you were not able to attend the workshop, the City would like to get your input through an online survey that asks the same questions that were asked at the workshop.  Under the RA Long Park Master Plan heading, review the project background information and then take the short survey.  The online survey will be available through Friday, November 13.

More information:  Please contact Ivona Kininmonth at 442-5208 if you have any questions about the survey or the master plan.

Councilmember Mary Jane Melink earns Certificate of Municipal Leadership

Councilmember Mary Jane Melink recently received a Certificate of Municipal Leadership (CML) from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC). Councilmember Melink completed over 30 hours of training credits to earn this distinction.  The CML program is designed to enhance the ability of elected municipal officials. The program provides mayors and council members in Washington with knowledge and skills required for effective governance. To earn this certificate, the official attends a variety of AWC sponsored municipal workshops including sessions on budgeting, land use planning, personnel, and leadership. The courses help mayors and council members learn the essentials of municipal service and improve their ability to work with council colleagues, City staff, and citizens.

Pick-up of leaves from City-owned trees runs October through January

From October through January, leaves from City of Longview maintained trees only may be placed in the street for pick up by the City’s Street Division.  “It’s important that we remove fallen leaves from these areas so that vehicles and pedestrian traffic can move safely throughout the city,” says Street Supervisor Rick Chinchen.  “Our crews use shovels, pitchforks, loaders and dump trucks to load and haul leaves to pre-designated areas for composting.”  Please observe the following guidelines when placing leaves in City streets, which are considered public rights-of-way:

  • Place only leaves from City-maintained trees. Yard debris is the property owner’s responsibility.  Leaves from trees belonging to property owners can be taken to the Waste Control Transfer Station from for a fee.
  • Place leaves in rows about one foot from the curb to allow for drainage, and to make it easier for the street sweeper to pick them up.  If the sweeper is unable to pick the leaves up, a street crew will remove them with a front end loader.
  • Do not put branches or sticks in leaf piles as it may damage the sweeper.
  • Be patient. Leaf pick up is on a structured schedule; your leaves will be picked up as soon as possible.

More information:  Any questions about leaf pick-up may be directed to the street supervisor at 442.5620.  Citizens may also request to have leaves delivered to their gardens for composting by calling 442.5620.
