Letter 16 - Letter to My Future Self

City of Longview Parks and RecreationDear Future Self,

Next year will come and go far quicker than you will ever expect. You will blink and realize 2019 is already upon us. There will be a lot of ups, downs, trials, tribulations, memories, and milestones. There may even be unanswered questions, but hopefully one won’t be where did the time go?

On December 31, 2017, stop and take a breath. Take a moment to reflect and think about our team’s accomplishments. You know we have spent all last year working tirelessly to create amazing opportunities for those in Longview and those who visit. You’ve been part of an incredible team that has made the quality of life better for our community.

Now take another breath and take a forward facing view of the year to come.

Be very excited.

2018 is going to be awesome.

It’s not going to be all sunshine and rainbows; I can’t promise you that - we will weather some storms. We will stumble, have setbacks, get frustrated, and wish we could have done more for our little town. Don’t worry so much about that, we will be successful in our endeavors to make Longview a happier, healthier, and more playful place to be. Everything our team does has that goal in mind, that’s how you’ll know we are headed in the right direction.

You will have days that you struggle. One person or one negative situation will try to ruin it for everyone else, whether it’s a broken tree, damaged playground, or graffiti - don't give up. Remind our team that we are here for the greater good, the people who care, and a City poised for greatness. It… is… all… worth… it, it always will be.

You will have good days, nay great days!…. when you are notified by a citizen telling you how beautiful the park system is and know the effort our crew puts in day in and day out to make that happen. You will stop by an after-school program and see the positive effect it has on the kids, you will go for your lunchtime run around Lake Sacajawea and see our community being active, and you will attend a community event and see families making lifelong memories. Remember that this is what it’s all about. These are all the things our team is creating as a way to build up our community for the positive.

2018 is going to be amazing. Enjoy it, all of it. I promise we will have enough time to make a difference and make people smile, so stop stressing so much about it. You miss the fun if you are stressed. Be in the now, talk to those around you, ask them how things are, and truly listen.

Remember your motto: Work hard, play hard, make a difference, repeat! It is as simple as that, so get going!

We’ve got this,
Past Self
